We at GCD are delighted to have won two awards at the UK App Awards 2020 for Best News App and Best Streaming App, for our projects with Independent.ie and FarmFLiX. And by way of further celebration, we were also appointed finalists in the highly coveted App Agency of the Year category.
The recognition these awards have brought has been wonderful for both our team and clients alike, and has been warmly welcomed in this somewhat challenging year.
The UK App Awards take place each year and are committed to celebrating and rewarding excellence in apps developed in the UK or for the UK market. The awards seek to recognise exceptional UX design and innovation in app development, across a wide range of verticals and sectors.
News App of the Year – GCD and Independent.ie App
The solution that brought us the award for ‘Best News App’ is the native iOS and Android app for the leading Irish news publishing brand, Independent.ie.
Alongside the Independent.ie team, we at GCD have been working to deliver an unrivalled news app experience for Independent.ie readers and most recently have assisted the company in building and launching a premium news subscription and in app purchasing solution to support their commercial objectives.
In every essence, the Independent.ie app has proved to be a real success story, with a highly engaged audience who are displaying engagement levels far above other digital channels. The introduction of the premium subscription service has given the editorial team the tools to create premium content and to diversify their product offering.

Streaming App of the Year – GCD and FarmFLiX
The project that brought us the award for ‘Best Streaming App’ is FarmFLiX, an app often described by its owners as the ‘Netflix for Farmers’. Based locally in Northern Ireland, FarmFLiX is a subscription based agricultural video platform that produces and delivers fresh and unique agricultural videos to both entertain and educate the farming community, framing enthusiasts and those connected to the agrifood sector.
Working alongside the inhouse FarmFLiX software team, GCD developed both the cross platform app aspect of the business (designed for both iOS and Android), as well as the custom back-end administrative platform to manage content, subscriptions and coupons.
In terms of achievement, the app has enabled a brand new business to be brought to market; a new start up that is really carving a name for itself amongst its niche target audience.
