59% say running a small business is harder today than five years ago

With new technologies emerging at a rapid pace over the last few years, it’s no wonder that almost 60% of small business owners say it’s harder to run their business now than it was five years ago.

This is according to a survey by Constant Contact, carried out to mark National Small Business Week in the USA. The survey delved into a range of issues that concern small business owners and asked participants to compare what it’s like running their businesses today compared with five years ago.

Some of the most interesting findings were:

  • Of the 59% who said that running a small business today is harder than it was five years ago, 49% said that it’s harder to keep up to date with technology.
  • Of the 59% who said that running a small business today is harder than it was five years ago, 40% said that there’s now more competition.
  • 12% said that it’s easier to run a small business now than five years ago. Of these, 89% said that online marketing tools make it cheaper and easier to market their business.
  • 98% of small business owners use email marketing today, compared with 64% five years ago.
  • 87% of small business owners use social media marketing today, compared to 10% five years ago.
  • 65% of small business owners said that their top concern is finding enough time to do everything needed to run their business.
  • 63% said customers have higher expectations today than they did five years ago.
  • 71% said customers expect more value today than five years ago.
  • 52% said customers expect more discounts today than five years ago.
  • 72% expect 2013 revenue to outperform 2012 revenue.
